The reward to the worthy

There are many rewards for those who are judged worthy by Jesus. The greatest reward is the love of God but there are many others described in the Holy Bible. The purpose of this writing is for the reader to gain or strengthen their knowledge of the reward for the worthy in the hope that it might help people turn to God, work harder for God, or glorify God - the purpose is not to explain every gift for the worthy. There are many gifts for the worthy, much more than I know. These people are described as worthy and also the chosen, or the saints.

God has made promises of future blessings. These promises were made long ago to the fathers of Israel and to a king of Israel. In the past, only the Jews could receive them, but because of Jesus’ sacrifice, now everyone can receive them.

These promises of future blessings are under the alias the gospel, or good news, of the kingdom of God. When Jesus reached the age of 30 he was baptized, and went throughout Israel preaching this gospel and the requirements to receive the blessings (Mark 1:14-15,Mark 1:14-15XWaiting for response Luke 8:1,Luke 8:1XWaiting for response Luke 4:43,Luke 4:43XWaiting for response Matthew 5 - Matthew 7, Luke 3:21-23).Luke 3:21-23XWaiting for response

The Jews did not believe him and eventually crucified him (Luke 4:17-30,Luke 4:17-30XWaiting for response Mark 3:6,Mark 3:6XWaiting for response Mark 15:1).Mark 15:1XWaiting for response After he died and was resurrected, he explained the Holy Scriptures to his apostles (Luke 24:45).Luke 24:45XWaiting for response His apostles then began spreading the gospel to the Jews, preaching that they can be saved because of Christ, even though they had done terrible things - like the crucifixion of Christ (Acts 3:13-21,Acts 3:13-21XWaiting for response Acts 1:8,Acts 1:8XWaiting for response Acts 14:7,Acts 14:7XWaiting for response Acts 5:29-32).Acts 5:29-32XWaiting for response

After some time, Jesus appeared to Paul and told him that the Gentiles, or non-Jews, could also be included in the promises and that he should preach to them (Acts 26:15-18,Acts 26:15-18XWaiting for response Galatians 3:26-29).Galatians 3:26-29XWaiting for response The group of people, Gentile or Jew, who are holy because they will be saved by their faith in Christ and by doing the commandments of God are called saints (1 Corinthians 1:2,1 Corinthians 1:2XWaiting for response Matthew 7:21,Matthew 7:21XWaiting for response Galatians 3:11,Galatians 3:11XWaiting for response James 2:24,26).James 2:24,26XWaiting for response

We are blessed because the preaching by Jesus and Jesus’ apostles is recorded and available for us to read in the New Testament. The Old Testament, on the other hand, contains a vast amount of information, including the promises made by God to the fathers of Israel and to the king of Israel. These promises are directly related to the reward to the worthy.

Promises to the fathers of Israel

The first set of promises made by God were to these fathers of Israel: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Out of these promises, the ones that are relevant to all of us because of Christ are these:

  • Their seed would reign with the fathers of Israel over the land of Israel forever (Genesis 13:14-15,Genesis 13:14-15XWaiting for response Genesis 15:18,Genesis 15:18XWaiting for response Genesis 17:8,Genesis 17:8XWaiting for response Genesis 26:3-4,Genesis 26:3-4XWaiting for response Genesis 28:13)Genesis 28:13XWaiting for response
  • Their seed would be as the sand of the sea in number (Genesis 13:16,Genesis 13:16XWaiting for response Genesis 22:17,Genesis 22:17XWaiting for response Genesis 26:4,Genesis 26:4XWaiting for response Genesis 28:14)Genesis 28:14XWaiting for response
  • Their seed would be a blessing to all families of the earth (Genesis 12:3,Genesis 12:3XWaiting for response Genesis 22:18,Genesis 22:18XWaiting for response Genesis 26:4,Genesis 26:4XWaiting for response Genesis 28:14)Genesis 28:14XWaiting for response
  • The fathers of Israel would be fathers of many nations (Genesis 17:4-6,Genesis 17:4-6XWaiting for response Genesis 26:4)Genesis 26:4XWaiting for response
  • God will be the fathers of Israel’s God, and God will be their seed’s God (Genesis 17:7-8)Genesis 17:7-8XWaiting for response
  • Their seed would have dominion over their enemies (Genesis 22:17)Genesis 22:17XWaiting for response
  • Kings would come out of them (Genesis 17:6)Genesis 17:6XWaiting for response

The seed in all of these blessings is Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16,Galatians 3:16XWaiting for response Matthew 1:1).Matthew 1:1XWaiting for response So you can read these promises again and replace the word seed with Jesus.

The apostle Paul makes it clear in his letter to the Galatians that anyone who is judged worthy to receive the reward because of Jesus Christ is an heir to the promises to the fathers of Israel (Galatians 3:26-29).Galatians 3:26-29XWaiting for response So you can read the bullet points of the promises to the fathers of Israel again, and replace the words their seed with Jesus and then replace the word Jesus with the phrase Jesus and those who are judged worthy by Jesus.

Those who receive the promises because of Jesus are termed as living “in” Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:22,1 Corinthians 15:22XWaiting for response Galatians 3:27).Galatians 3:27XWaiting for response So the promise that the seed, Jesus, will be as the sand of the sea in number suddenly makes a lot of sense.

When the first set of promises were made to the fathers of Israel, there were no people of Israel, much less a kingdom. After some time, there were many descendants of these fathers who all formed the people of Israel - called Israelites at the time. Some of the promises were fulfilled at this time, but not all. The Iraelites did claim the land of Israel and it was the kingdom of God, but Abraham and the other fathers of Israel were not resurrected, and the kingdom of God did not last forever - so the promises are left unfulfilled (Psalm 22:28,Psalm 22:28XWaiting for response Psalms 114:1-2,Psalms 114:1-2XWaiting for response 2 Chronicles 13:8,2 Chronicles 13:8XWaiting for response 1 Chronicles 29:23,1 Chronicles 29:23XWaiting for response Acts 1:6,Acts 1:6XWaiting for response Acts 2:29).Acts 2:29XWaiting for response

Promises to the king of Israel

The second set of promised blessings were made later to the third king of Israel - David (2 Samuel 7:10-16).2 Samuel 7:10-16XWaiting for response The blessings that are relevant to all of us because of Christ are these:

  • David’s seed will be king over his kingdom forever
  • Jews will not be afflicted by wickedness anymore
  • God will be his seed’s father, and his seed will be God’s son
  • God’s seed will build a house for God
  • David’s house will live forever

The seed in all of these blessings is also Jesus Christ. Jesus is in the line of David and an angel of God confirms to Mary that he would inherit the blessings when she was pregnant with Jesus, saying; he shall be the son of God; sit on the throne of David; and his kingdom shall not end (Luke 1:30-33,Luke 1:30-33XWaiting for response Matthew 1:1,Matthew 1:1XWaiting for response Acts 13:22-23,Acts 13:22-23XWaiting for response Psalms 89:3,4,34,37,Psalms 89:3,4,34,37XWaiting for response Acts 2:29-30).Acts 2:29-30XWaiting for response Jesus preached these same promises to the Jews - their kingdom would be restored again and it would last forever (Acts 1:6,Acts 1:6XWaiting for response Isaiah 1:26,Isaiah 1:26XWaiting for response Amos 9:11,Amos 9:11XWaiting for response Matthew 19:28,Matthew 19:28XWaiting for response Luke 4:43,Luke 4:43XWaiting for response Mark 1:14-15,Mark 1:14-15XWaiting for response John 11:25-27,John 11:25-27XWaiting for response John 19:21).John 19:21XWaiting for response At the time they were living under Roman rule so even just to have their own kingdom again would have been great news.

There is a house of Christ, sometimes called the temple of God, which is made not by brick and mortar but by the saints (Hebrews 3:6,Hebrews 3:6XWaiting for response 1 Corinthians 3:16,1 Corinthians 3:16XWaiting for response 2 Corinthians 5:1).2 Corinthians 5:1XWaiting for response David is specifically mentioned as one who will be saved, so he is definitely a part of this house (Hebrews 11:32,Hebrews 11:32XWaiting for response 39-40). This house is the house in the promises to David that will live forever, that we can also be a part of.

The Jews had knowledge of the promises to the fathers of Israel and to king David, but did not believe Jesus is the recipient of them and the Son of God (Matthew 8:11,Matthew 8:11XWaiting for response Mark 10:47,Mark 10:47XWaiting for response Matthew 22:42,Matthew 22:42XWaiting for response Matthew 2:2,Matthew 2:2XWaiting for response Mark 14:61-64).Mark 14:61-64XWaiting for response Jesus is the Son of God and the recipient of these promises, and he proved it by doing many miracles and eventually being resurrected by God.

After Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles continued preaching what Jesus preached after receiving the Holy Spirit, expanding their preaching to the Gentiles by order of Jesus - their acts are recorded in the book of Acts (Acts 2:4,Acts 2:4XWaiting for response Acts 14:7,Acts 14:7XWaiting for response Acts 3, Acts 5:29-32,Acts 5:29-32XWaiting for response Acts 14:20-27,Acts 14:20-27XWaiting for response Acts 17:1-4,10-12,16-34).Acts 17:1-4,10-12,16-34XWaiting for response They also preached through epistles, or letters, to people - some being recorded in the New Testament (Romans - Jude, Galatians 3:26-29).Galatians 3:26-29XWaiting for response

The promises by God are known by many names - there is the gospel of Jesus Christ; the gospel of God; the gospel of the kingdom of heaven; and probably many other names (Matthew 4:17,23,Matthew 4:17,23XWaiting for response Mark 1:1,Mark 1:1XWaiting for response Romans 1:1).Romans 1:1XWaiting for response Whatever the name, the truth of the gospel does not change because the promises and the prophecies do not change. The truth that is contained in the Bible is that we can all receive the promises made by God by living in Jesus Christ and live forever in the kingdom of God under the reign of the righteous king of the Jews - Jesus (Luke 1:30-33,Luke 1:30-33XWaiting for response Galatians 3:26-29).Galatians 3:26-29XWaiting for response

The reward

Understanding those promises is the core of the gospel of the kingdom of God. However, there are other prophecies which reveal more of the reward to those who Jesus calls worthy - prophecies about the future kingdom, the citizens who live there, and about the whole world at that time. In no particular order, this section of this writing focuses on those prophecies which either reinforce the promises or expand on the reward for the worthy.

Live forever

Those who are called worthy shall live forever (Romans 6:22-23,Romans 6:22-23XWaiting for response 1 Peter 1:9).1 Peter 1:9XWaiting for response If any have died before Jesus’ return, they are to be resurrected first (1 Thessalonians 4:16).1 Thessalonians 4:16XWaiting for response

Live in the kingdom of God

They will live in Israel in the kingdom of God and shall never be taken from there (Isaiah 34:17,Isaiah 34:17XWaiting for response Amos 9:14-15).Amos 9:14-15XWaiting for response

They will have all their sins forgiven (Revelation 1:5,Revelation 1:5XWaiting for response Colossians 1:13-14,Colossians 1:13-14XWaiting for response Hebrews 8:12).Hebrews 8:12XWaiting for response

See God’s face

Everyone follows God and Jesus

The Almighty God is perfectly just and righteous and Jesus manifested God when he was on the earth. When reigning as king, he will continue manifesting God, commanding, leading and ruling people as a king does (1 Timothy 3:16,1 Timothy 3:16XWaiting for response Revelation 11:15).Revelation 11:15XWaiting for response What a marvelous blessing - to be ruled by the righteous Son of God and to follow him.

God’s commandments are the best way to live life. God, the Almighty power over all things and the Creator, who is most kind, knows what is best for us and has made the commandments to line up with that - the same commandments that Jesus commands (John 7:16,John 7:16XWaiting for response 1 John 5:3).1 John 5:3XWaiting for response A great blessing for those who are called worthy shall be to follow God, Jesus and their commandments always (Ezekiel 11:19-20,Ezekiel 11:19-20XWaiting for response Hebrews 8:10,Hebrews 8:10XWaiting for response Revelation 7:16-17).Revelation 7:16-17XWaiting for response

All people in the kingdom of God will serve him (Daniel 7:13-14).Daniel 7:13-14XWaiting for response In this way we will be united with God and Jesus, just as Jesus prays that all the people who live by him are made one with God and himself (John 17:11,21,23).John 17:11,21,23XWaiting for response

Joy

People will live in the benefits of all the rewards and these rewards will inevitably produce joy. There will be much joy for those who are considered worthy by Christ. There are many reasons for this joy, here are a few.

When everyone follows the commandments of God, the result is joy. This is exactly what will be happening in the kingdom of God - everyone will be following the commandments! It is difficult to see this presently because people take advantage of those who are kind, just and forgiving. But when everyone does the commandments of God, imagine the joy that will abound! This is the very reason Jesus teaches the commandments - so that “your joy might remain in you and be full” (John 15:11).John 15:11XWaiting for response

God tells us that he, himself, will wipe away all tears from our eyes (Revelation 7:16-17).Revelation 7:16-17XWaiting for response

… the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion [a mountain in Jerusalem] with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 35:10Isaiah 35:10XWaiting for response

Not afflicted by wickedness

The citizens will not be afflicted by wickedness (2 Samuel 7:10,2 Samuel 7:10XWaiting for response Isaiah 60:18,Isaiah 60:18XWaiting for response Revelation 7:16-17,Revelation 7:16-17XWaiting for response Isaiah 35:10).Isaiah 35:10XWaiting for response

Kings and priests reigning with Jesus

The promises include Jesus Christ as the ruler of the future kingdom of God (Isaiah 9:6-7,Isaiah 9:6-7XWaiting for response Luke 1:30-33,Luke 1:30-33XWaiting for response 2 Samuel 7:13,2 Samuel 7:13XWaiting for response Genesis 13:14-15,Genesis 13:14-15XWaiting for response Micah 4:7).Micah 4:7XWaiting for response People who are called worthy by Jesus will be kings and priests reigning with Jesus (Revelation 1:6,Revelation 1:6XWaiting for response Matthew 25:34,Matthew 25:34XWaiting for response Isaiah 32:1,Isaiah 32:1XWaiting for response Isaiah 34:17,Isaiah 34:17XWaiting for response 2 Timothy 2:12).2 Timothy 2:12XWaiting for response Jesus says that those people who are faithful and wise will be made ruler over all that he has (Luke 12:42-44).Luke 12:42-44XWaiting for response

Have the name of God

They shall have the name of God (Micah 4:5,Micah 4:5XWaiting for response Revelation 14:1,Revelation 14:1XWaiting for response Revelation 22:4,Revelation 22:4XWaiting for response Revelation 3:12,Revelation 3:12XWaiting for response Revelation 2:17).Revelation 2:17XWaiting for response Probably similar to how the angels are referred to as God (Genesis 1:1).Genesis 1:1XWaiting for response

Have the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit was given to Jesus’ apostles after he ascended to heaven (Acts 2:4).Acts 2:4XWaiting for response The apostle Paul writes that this was just a foretaste of the Holy Spirit to be given when Jesus returns (Joel 2:1,27,28,Joel 2:1,27,28XWaiting for response Ephesians 1:13-14,Ephesians 1:13-14XWaiting for response 2 Corinthians 5:5,2 Corinthians 5:5XWaiting for response Luke 11:13,Luke 11:13XWaiting for response Zechariah 12:10,Zechariah 12:10XWaiting for response Ezekiel 39:29,Ezekiel 39:29XWaiting for response Isaiah 44:3).Isaiah 44:3XWaiting for response

Those who are worthy will be made equal to the angels of God (Luke 20:36).Luke 20:36XWaiting for response

Children of God

Jesus is the Son of God and once living in Jesus, people are made children of God (Matthew 3:17,Matthew 3:17XWaiting for response Luke 20:35-36,Luke 20:35-36XWaiting for response 2 Corinthians 6:18).2 Corinthians 6:18XWaiting for response

It refers to the mortal nature that we have being healed. Rather than slowly dying, the worthy shall live forever and have a divine nature, having the same body that Jesus has now (2 Peter 1:4,2 Peter 1:4XWaiting for response Philippians 3:20-21).Philippians 3:20-21XWaiting for response

There will be peace between the animals and between humans and animals. For example; the wolf shall dwell with the lamb; the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and a child shall lead a calf, young lion and fatling. This is because there are no more carnivores - specifically mentioned is the lion shall eat straw like the ox. Isaiah even prophecies that the child shall be able to put their hand in a snake’s hole and play on top of it (Isaiah 11:6-10,Isaiah 11:6-10XWaiting for response Isaiah 65:25,Isaiah 65:25XWaiting for response Ezekiel 34:28,Ezekiel 34:28XWaiting for response Hosea 2:18,Hosea 2:18XWaiting for response Ezekiel 34:25,28).Ezekiel 34:25,28XWaiting for response

Who is worthy

The only way that any of us can receive the reward for the worthy is through Christ and because of his sacrifice (Revelation 1:5,Revelation 1:5XWaiting for response Collosians 1:13-14). Jesus is, in fact, the only worthy one (Revelation 5:4,9).Revelation 5:4,9XWaiting for response But fortunately, we can live in Christ and receive salvation because of him (Galatians 3:21-29).Galatians 3:21-29XWaiting for response Jesus will decide who is worthy as God has made him the judge (John 5:22,27,John 5:22,27XWaiting for response 2 Timothy 4:1,2 Timothy 4:1XWaiting for response 1 Peter 4:5,1 Peter 4:5XWaiting for response Acts 10:42).Acts 10:42XWaiting for response Jesus judges according to God’s will (John 5:30,John 5:30XWaiting for response Romans 2:16).Romans 2:16XWaiting for response

Jesus and his apostles make it clear who will be called worthy. There are two requirements; believe the truth regarding the gospel; and do the commandments of God (Matthew 25:14-46,Matthew 25:14-46XWaiting for response Mark 16:16,Mark 16:16XWaiting for response Galatians 3:11,Galatians 3:11XWaiting for response Hebrews 10:38,Hebrews 10:38XWaiting for response James 2:24,James 2:24XWaiting for response Romans 2:13).Romans 2:13XWaiting for response

More work, more reward

These two requirements are exactly that - requirements. There is no way to get around meeting these two requirements. They must be met to receive the reward. But the saint can do more work and receive greater reward. Just like the angels have arch angels - the original word translated to arch can be translated as chief. Considering the saints will be made equal to the angels, it makes sense that the saints are in a similar position. Jesus directly preaches to the people to not gain treasure on earth where it is corruptible, but gain treasure in heaven where it is incorruptible. This can be applied to the same reward for each worthy person but also to greater treasures for an individual.

An angel of God says to the prophet Daniel that the wise saints shall shine as the sky but the saints who turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars forever (Daniel 12:2-3).Daniel 12:2-3XWaiting for response The amount of brightness indicates that there will be different levels of reward. In this example, it is those who turn many to righteousness will receive a greater reward.

The apostle Peter writes that love among those in Christ shall cover a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8).1 Peter 4:8XWaiting for response Also, the apostle James writes that those who convert the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death and hide a multitude of sins (James 5:20).James 5:20XWaiting for response The apostles’ writings prove that there are specific rewards for specific works, and perhaps, as sins are forgiven, the work of that saint holds more value, resulting in a greater reward.

When the reward shall be given

The reward shall be given upon Jesus' return to the earth (2 Timothy 4:1,2 Timothy 4:1XWaiting for response 8, 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17).1 Thessalonians 4:14-17XWaiting for response At this time, Jesus will judge people, the evil will be punished but those who have faith and have done the work required of them will be given the reward (Romans 2:5-16,Romans 2:5-16XWaiting for response 2 Corinthians 5:9-10,2 Corinthians 5:9-10XWaiting for response Colossians 3:24-25,Colossians 3:24-25XWaiting for response John 5:22-30).John 5:22-30XWaiting for response

After death a saint’s works will not be forgotten and will be rewarded, as we read in Revelation:

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Revelation 14:13Revelation 14:13XWaiting for response

No human knows the exact time that Jesus will return (Matthew 24:36,42,44).Matthew 24:36,42,44XWaiting for response Jesus says that he shall come as a thief in the night and it shall be sudden, so followers of him must always be doing good (Matthew 24:27,Matthew 24:27XWaiting for response 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3).1 Thessalonians 5:1-3XWaiting for response He warns that those who are evil will be caught in the act of doing evil and will not deceive him (Matthew 24:45-51).Matthew 24:45-51XWaiting for response

God and Jesus are praised and exalted

The rewards for the worthy show the generosity of our Father in heaven and the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There will be much praise and exaltation to God and Jesus from those who receive the reward for; God is God, he has created everything, and has made the reward possible; and Jesus has enabled us through his works, willingness, and sacrifice to receive the reward. At this future time, the knowledge of God and the knowledge of His glory shall cover the earth as the waters do the sea (Isaiah 11:9,Isaiah 11:9XWaiting for response Habakkuk 2:14).Habakkuk 2:14XWaiting for response What a glorious time to look forward to and work toward!

And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. [2] Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. [3] Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. [4] And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. [5] Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. [6] Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Isaiah 12

He [Jesus] shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment... [4] He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.... [7] In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth... [11] Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him... [17] men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed. [18] Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. [19] And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
